**Visa launches B2B payments platform powered by blockchain**
Visa has launched its B2B payments platform, which uses distributed ledger technology (DLT) to enable near-instant international payments.
The platform, called Visa B2B Connect, will initially serve businesses seeking to make payments to 30 markets, with 90 more corridors expected to be covered by the close of 2019.
Visa says the platform will help its corporate clients sidestep the slow correspondent banking network, which can often take days to process payments.
“By creating a solution that facilitates direct, bank-to-bank transactions, we are eliminating friction associated with key industry pain points,” said Kevin Phalen, SVP, Global Head of Visa Business Solutions.
Phalen told Reuters that the network is not fully based on a distributed ledger, but the technology has been used for some elements as it allows more information sharing than traditional systems.
Visa originally partnered with Chain, a blockchain startup that builds enterprise blockchains for financial services, to develop B2B Connect. However, the company ultimately turned to Hyperledger Fabric for the DLT side of the system with assistance from IBM. Visa participated in Chain’s $30 million funding round in the autumn of 2015.
Visa B2B Connect was first rolled out in a pilot phase to test bank-to-bank payments in November 2017.
