Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has unveiled a plan for cryptocurrency regulation, saying that the "Wild West" of digital assets needs to be reined in.
In a proposal released on Wednesday, Bloomberg said that the U.S. government should create a "comprehensive regulatory framework" for cryptocurrencies, including clarifying which agencies are responsible for overseeing the space.

Bloomberg's plan recommends creating a framework to clarify when tokens are considered securities, "protecting consumers from cryptocurrency-related fraud," and clarifying the tax regime for cryptocurrencies.
The proposal also calls for the creation of a new Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) unit to focus on cryptocurrency-related crimes.
"The United States must act now to ensure that this emerging technology is used for good and not for evil," Bloomberg said in a statement. "We need to bring clarity to the regulatory landscape, protect consumers, and ensure that the United States remains the global leader in financial innovation."
Bloomberg's plan is the latest in a series of proposals from presidential candidates on how to regulate cryptocurrencies. In December, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) released a plan that called for a ban on cryptocurrency mining and the creation of a new agency to oversee cryptocurrencies.
Other candidates, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Vice President Joe Biden, have also said that they would take action to regulate cryptocurrencies.
