**Former Coin.mx Employee Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison for Bitcoin Laundering**
A former employee of now-defunct Florida-based cryptocurrency exchange Coin.mx has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for laundering more than $1 million in Bitcoin proceeds from a cybercrime operation.
U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan sentenced Larry Gross on Monday, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Gross, 40, of Miami, was convicted in March of one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. He was also ordered to pay a $12,000 fine.
According to the government’s evidence, Gross worked as a customer service representative for Coin.mx from 2013 to 2015. During that time, he helped process Bitcoin transactions for customers of the exchange, including members of a cybercrime group that targeted companies like J.P. Morgan with cyberattacks.
Gross admitted that he knew that the Bitcoin transactions he processed were the proceeds of illegal activity, but he continued to process them anyway.
“Larry Gross knowingly helped a criminal organization launder millions of dollars in Bitcoin,” U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in a statement. “This prosecution demonstrates our commitment to holding accountable those who facilitate the laundering of illicit proceeds, no matter how sophisticated their methods may be.”
Gross is the third person to be sentenced in connection with the Coin.mx case. In June, co-founder Anthony Murgio was sentenced to five and a half years in prison, and last week co-founder Yuri Lebedev was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, with assistance from the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Secret Service.
