**Sydney-based Banxa, which allows users to buy and sell cryptocurrencies with fiat currencies, has laid off 30% of its staff,** according to The Australian Financial Review (AFR).
The company’s CEO Holger Arians said in a letter to employees that the decision was made “to ensure the long-term sustainability of our business.”
“Banxa must take decisive actions to reduce costs now, or else our company won’t be able to succeed over the long run,” Arians said.
The layoffs come as the cryptocurrency market has been hit by a sharp downturn in recent months. Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, has lost more than 70% of its value since its peak in November.
