"Bitcoin has become under-owned relative to the broader crypto market over the past few months as investors piled into DeFi and altcoins," Davies said. "As the DeFi craze subsides and yields collapse, we expect to see a rotation back into Bitcoin."
Ryan Watkins, a Bitcoin analyst at Messari, said that altcoins with lower market capitalizations outperformed BTC and ETH in 2020 thanks in part to global financial markets recovering and stabilizing "a bit."
"Most of the significant altcoin returns started in the second half of the year as tokens like COMP and YFI came onto the market," Watkins said.
As Q4 approaches and returns for altcoins have started to cool off, some professional cryptocurrency traders are betting on significant upside for Bitcoin amid continued downside for altcoins.
"The market is in a state of re-balancing," Davies said. "We expect to see Bitcoin outperform altcoins in Q4."
September's moderate altcoin sell-off could extend beyond Q4, however, according to John Zhou, co-founder of Bitfinex.
"Although I'm not a fan of making predictions, this month's downtrend for altcoins could last for at least a year," Zhou told CoinDesk.
