Following a closed beta that saw 2,000 traders test out the new trading platform for US users, Bitflyer USA has officially launched its platform.
Bitflyer, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in Japan, established a US subsidiary in San Francisco in August and has already received business licenses in 34 out of 50 US states.
In addition to launching its trading platform, Bitflyer also announced that it has been granted a Bitlicense by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). The Bitlicense is a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency businesses that has been met with criticism for its strict requirements. To date, only four companies have been granted a Bitlicense: Circle, Ripple, Coinbase, and now Bitflyer.
“We are pleased to have received a Bitlicense to operate in New York,” said Bitflyer CEO Yuzo Kano. “This is a vote of confidence from one of the most influential state regulatory agencies in the United States.”
Bitflyer’s US expansion is aimed at institutional investors who are still relatively unfamiliar with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The new trading platform will be designed specifically for high-volume traders who trade $100,000 or more per month, according to Bitflyer representatives.
“The expansion into the US is to provide our cross-border trading services to satisfy the large and growing demand from US institutional investors who are looking for access to large liquidity pools in multiple digital asset markets,” said Bitflyer USA Managing Director Bartek Ringwelski. “Through Bitflyer USA’s API-based trading platform, professional traders can set up and execute trades in just a few minutes.”
Bitflyer also plans to add support for additional cryptocurrencies such as Litecoin, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, and Bitcoin Cash in early 2018. For the launch of its US branch, the exchange is offering commission-free trading on Bitcoin until the end of the year.
