**Robinhood and Libertyx receive Bitlicense to operate cryptocurrency services in New York**
Robinhood, a stock trading startup, and Bitcoin ATM provider Libertyx have been granted Bitlicense by the New York regulator.
The New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) announced Thursday that it had issued a digital currency license to Robinhood Crypto, a subsidiary of Robinhood, and Moon Inc., a business arm of Libertyx. Robinhood also received a money transmission license from the agency.
NYDFS Superintendent Maria Vullo said that New York has "a thriving financial services sector and growing technology sector" thanks in part to its regulatory framework.
Robinhood co-founder and CEO Vlad Tenev said that the license "opens the door for a range of additional investment products beyond what's currently available on Robinhood's platform."
"The New York Department of Financial Services has been incredibly supportive throughout this process, and we look forward to their continued guidance as we launch Robinhood Crypto in the state," Tenev said.
Robinhood has been offering cryptocurrency trading services since February 2018, launching limited Bitcoin and Ether products in some states. At the time of writing, the company offers trading in Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Dogecoin, and Ethereum Classic.
While New York residents have not been able to access Robinhood's services, the company said it would launch services across the state "in the coming months."
Similarly, Libertyx co-founder and CEO Chris Yim said that the company was "thrilled" to receive the Bitlicense, "and to introduce the first Bitcoin debit cards to New Yorkers."
The company will also be the first enterprise to be licensed to provide Bitcoin purchase services via debit cards at traditional ATMs, according to the press release.
To date, there are about 16 different companies that currently hold a Bitlicense, which was first introduced by NYDFS in 2015.
