Lawmakers ask Garland to release Linter report on CBDC, citing Fed's lack of authority to issue
A group of Republican lawmakers have asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to release the Linter report on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), arguing that the Federal Reserve does not have the authority to issue a CBDC without congressional action.
"As you know, Congress' authority over coining money is exclusive," the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Garland. "The Supreme Court has recognized Congress' power to coin money and regulate the value thereof, confirming Congress' authority to regulate each phase of currency. Add to that the right to issue circulating notes, and it may restrain the circulation of notes not issued under its own authority."
The lawmakers set an Oct. 15 deadline for Garland to respond.
