**Bitfinex hack: US recovers $4.5 billion in bitcoin**
The US Department of Justice has recovered $4.5 billion in bitcoin stolen from Bitfinex in 2016.
Ilya Lichtenstein, 35, and his wife, Heather Morgan, 31, were arrested in Manhattan on Tuesday on charges of conspiring to launder the stolen bitcoin.
Lichtenstein and Morgan allegedly conspired to launder 119,754 bitcoins (BTC), worth roughly $71 million at the time of the hack.
The couple pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the US, CNBC reported.
“Bitfinex diligently worked with the US Department of Justice to identify the perpetrators of the hack, recover the stolen bitcoin, and bring the hackers to justice,” an external spokesperson for Bitfinex told CoinDesk. “After seven years, those efforts have come to fruition.”
The recovered bitcoin is currently being held by the US Marshals Service.
