**Banco Masventas (BMV) in Argentina announced on Monday (May 21) that it would allow customers to conduct transnational money transfers using Bitcoin.**
The local bank will use Bitcoin as an international payment channel instead of Swift, through a partnership with cryptocurrency exchange Bitex.
Manuel Beaudroit, Bitex's chief operating officer, told CoinDesk that the cryptocurrency startup believes this marks the first time a traditional bank has adopted Bitcoin for cross-border remittances.
“We are pleased to introduce Bitex, the new service of BMV to perform or conduct international money transfers.

Joe Dakak, the main shareholder of Banco Masventas, noted in a statement that the move is part of an effort to enhance its capacity to offer digital services on a smartphone platform, while reducing spending on service fees for the bank.
“One of the steps to accomplish this goal is to establish a strategic cooperation with Bitex to bring payment options and receive money transfer from abroad to our customers,” Dakak said.
Although no actual transactions have yet been processed (the service is expected to go live on May 22), Beaudroit said the bank will soon begin using Bitcoin in customer transactions.
He told CoinDesk:
“Customers only need to ask the bank to open an international transaction, and the bank will find Bitex as the dealer. For customers, everything happened completely transparent, they did not touch nor see Bitcoin. We will complete all procedures for users, making sure they will not have to contact Bitcoin at all.”
