The company cited the prolonged downturn in the cryptocurrency market as the reason for its closure, and said that it is making the difficult decision to protect the best interests of its stakeholders and customers.

Wyre then raised its withdrawal limit to 90% for all users, but quickly lifted it on January 13 after being pressured by an unnamed partner. Coincidentally, this was also the time that the company laid off 75 employees.
Wyre is the latest in a series of cryptocurrency companies to shut down in recent months. In May 2023 alone, a number of projects have ceased operations, including Unbanked cryptocurrency Fintech; Lightning Network-based Bottlepay payment platform; Hotbit cryptocurrency exchange; Terrassa platform; and Digital Currency Group's institutional trading platform TradeBlock.
