The US government has sanctioned cryptocurrency trading platform Chatex for facilitating ransomware money laundering on the platform.
According to a notice published on November 8, the US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has blacklisted Chatex, which is owned by Russian national Egor Petukhovsky.
OFAC said that Chatex has processed transactions for multiple individuals involved in ransomware attacks, including Suex OTC, which was sanctioned by US federal agencies in September for the same reason.
Chatex is also banned from doing business with US entities and individuals.
Chatex claims to have more than 350,000 registered users, mainly in emerging markets such as Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics. The platform supports 14 different cryptocurrencies and is developing solutions for merchants to accept cryptocurrency payments.
Chatex is currently conducting an initial coin offering (ICO) for its own cryptocurrency, ChTX, on the MEXC and Gate.io exchanges.
