Following the footsteps of Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase, Lloyds Bank has become the latest major financial institution to bar customers from using credit cards to purchase cryptocurrencies.
The move comes amid concerns that investors may be using credit to buy cryptocurrencies in the midst of market euphoria, and then defaulting on their debts if the market turns.
However, the ban will not affect investors who make crypto purchases using debit cards.
A Lloyds spokesperson told BBC that the policy change is a result of its current review of its banking products.
“We are constantly reviewing our products and services to ensure they meet the needs of our customers,” the spokesperson said. “As part of this, we have taken the decision to no longer allow customers to purchase cryptocurrency using credit cards.”
The ban comes at a time when the bitcoin market has been experiencing a significant decline. After reaching its all-time high of nearly $20,000 in mid-December 2017, bitcoin is now seeing a two-month low of just below $8,000 today, based on data from CoinDesk’s Bitcoin Price Index.
