Italian Finance Minister Giovanni Tria has warned that cryptocurrencies could be used to shield criminal activity such as tax evasion, money laundering, and terrorism financing. He also said that cryptocurrencies could undermine central banks' ability to conduct monetary policy.
Tria made the remarks in an interview with Bloomberg, in which he said that there are between 4,000 and 5,000 unregulated cryptocurrencies in circulation. He added that the Italian government has closed down hundreds of websites illegally gathering savings in Italy.
"If it takes too long at a European level to come up with a solution, (Italy) will have to take it for its own measures," Tria said.
