According to a new survey by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), 62% of financial services firms plan to increase their investment in blockchain and cybersecurity technologies in 2016-2017.
The survey, which polled 45 member firms from a variety of areas within financial services, found that firms are increasingly interested in blockchain technology as a way to improve efficiency and security.
Specifically, 55% of firms are monitoring, researching, or developing solutions for blockchain technology, while 74% of firms have specific plans to invest in cybersecurity.
The findings come as financial services firms face increasing pressure to reduce costs and improve security in the face of new regulations and emerging threats.
"New and emerging technologies have taken the financial services industry by storm," said Jeff Zoller, chair of SIFMA and vice president at U.S. investment firm T Rowe Price. "The results of our annual member survey confirm this sentiment, as firms plan increased investment in blockchain and cybersecurity technologies, as a method for combating long-term risk and cost."
The survey also found that 62% of firms plan to increase their investment in infrastructure in 2016, likely driven by the need to reduce costs.
"The financial services industry is facing a number of challenges, including increased regulation, evolving customer demands, and emerging technologies," said Sifma CEO Robert Glauber. "By investing in new technologies, firms can improve their efficiency, security, and customer experience."
The association has also announced that the theme of new technology and innovation disrupting the financial services industry will be the primary topic at its 22nd annual industry forum and vendor show, taking place on March 20-23 at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel.
