**Intel discontinues Realsense depth-sensing camera business**
Intel has discontinued its Realsense depth-sensing camera business, five years after it acquired the company behind the technology.
Realsense used a combination of two cameras to record depth information and process large amounts of data from those cameras. In addition to developing software and algorithms, Realsense also sold camera hardware to some customers.
Existing customers will still be fulfilled in their contracts, but once those contracts expire, Intel will no longer support the Realsense platform.
Sagi Ben Moshe, who led Realsense, announced two weeks ago that he would be leaving Intel.
Realsense aimed to make image and video processing easier and cheaper. Intel attached Realsense cameras to laptops to control gestures, to robots to serve as "eyes," and to screens to run facial recognition.
However, Realsense never became a mainstream consumer product.
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has said he wants Intel to regain its top position in the chip industry, so it's not surprising that the company is cutting back on businesses that are not core to its strategy.
