Pythagoras Market Neutral Fund, which uses a quantitative trading strategy to profit from market inefficiencies, was up 8.8% in 2022 despite the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX.
The fund, which is managed by John Dong, a former Citadel trader, uses a variety of strategies to find and exploit pricing discrepancies between different exchanges.
"We just look for spreads," Dong said. "We look for opportunities to buy and sell high simultaneously whenever the software detects an opportunity to do so."
The fund's strategy has been successful in volatile markets, as it was able to weather the recent downturn in the cryptocurrency market.
"The bad news is that we had redemptions," Dong said. "The good news is that there is less competition, more price dislocations and trading opportunities. Previous trades which hads [arbitraged] out are back to again."
Dong said that the fund has tightened its exposure to exchanges in light of the FTX collapse, and is now only using exchanges with the best technology and credit ratings.
He added that the fund is still seeing opportunities in the cryptocurrency market, and is looking forward to a more favorable trading environment in 2023.
