The mandate was approved by a vote of 529 in favor, 93 against, and 29 abstentions.
The MiCA framework is designed to regulate the crypto industry in the EU and address a number of concerns, including the potential for market manipulation, money laundering, and terrorist financing.
The framework includes provisions for the licensing of crypto exchanges and service providers, as well as rules for the issuance of crypto assets and the trading of derivatives.
It also includes a provision that would require proof-of-work cryptocurrencies to use at least 50% renewable energy by 2025 and 100% by 2030.
The provision was opposed by some EU lawmakers who argued that it would unfairly discriminate against proof-of-work cryptocurrencies.
However, the provision was ultimately included in the mandate after a compromise was reached between the Parliament and the Commission.
The trilogue talks between the Parliament, Commission, and Council are expected to last several months.
Once the trilogue talks are concluded, the MiCA framework will be put to a vote in the European Parliament and the Council.
If it is approved by both bodies, it will become law in the EU.
