The world's second-largest stock exchange, Nasdaq, is not interested in pursuing initial coin offerings (ICOs), according to CEO Adena Friedman.
In an interview with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Friedman said that Nasdaq is "not getting engaged" in ICOs because they are "a bleeding edge type of construct."
Friedman's comments are notable given that Nasdaq has been publicly working with blockchain since 2015 in a bid to create new capital markets for startups. The exchange operator has also filed a number of patent applications that seek to apply the tech.
However, Friedman said that Nasdaq is not interested in pursuing ICOs at this time because of the regulatory uncertainty surrounding the use case.
"We're not getting engaged in ICOs because it's a very new and evolving area," she said. "We want to make sure that we're doing things in a very thoughtful and careful way."
Friedman's comments come after the top US regulator for financial markets, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), moved to crack down on ICOs.
In December, the SEC issued a warning that ICOs could be considered securities offerings and therefore subject to federal securities laws. The SEC has also brought a number of enforcement actions against ICO issuers.
Friedman said that Nasdaq is closely monitoring the SEC's approach to ICOs and will "adapt our approach as needed."
"We want to make sure that we're doing things in a way that's compliant with the law," she said.
