**Ford and Cologne Test Blockchain for Automated Low-Emissions Zones**

Ford and the city of Cologne, Germany, are testing a blockchain-based system that will automatically switch plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to electric mode when they enter low-emissions zones.
The pilot program, which began in March, involves 10 PHEVs that have been equipped with cellular modems that enable geofencing. When the vehicles enter a low-emissions zone, the modems will send a signal to the vehicle's computer, which will then switch the vehicle to electric mode.
The metadata, such as when the vehicle enters or exits a zone as well as the miles driven, will be recorded to a blockchain. This data will be used to help municipal authorities manage and enforce low-emissions zones.
"Security, trust and transparency of emissions data are of paramount importance to all stakeholders in this project, and are key for our vision of cleaner air in the city," said Gunnar Herrmann, chairman of the management board of Ford-Werke GmbH.
The pilot program is part of SmartCity Cologne, a collaborative program to promote climate protection and energy transition.
