**Blockchain startup SpaceChain has secured $20 million in funding to launch its blockchain technology into space.**
The company, which was founded in 2017, plans to launch three satellites into orbit over the next 18 months. The satellites will be equipped with blockchain nodes that will allow users to conduct secure transactions without the need for an internet connection.
SpaceChain’s co-founder and CEO, Zee Zheng, told CoinDesk that his company’s satellite-based nodes are far more secure than terrestrial networks that process data on the open internet.
“We don’t need internet access to perform this kind of transaction,” Zheng said, “which eliminates a lot of potential risks for hacking.”
Zheng called his grant from the ESA an opportunity for the crypto community to learn more about blockchain space applications. He noted developers’ high interest in the security upside.
