**El Salvador to Offer Bitcoin-Backed Loans to Small Businesses**
El Salvador's government is working with Acumen, a Salvadoran cryptocurrency exchange, to offer bitcoin-backed loans to small businesses. The loans will have an annual interest rate of 6% to 7%, and will be available to businesses that are registered with the government's small business development agency, CONAMYP.
Acumen will convert the bitcoin used to secure the loans into stablecoins, such as USDC or Tether, and then send the U.S. dollars to CONAMYP. CONAMYP will then distribute the U.S. dollars to Salvadoran small businesses and entrepreneurs through the state-owned bank Banco Hipotecario.
Salvadoran businesses will repay the loans in U.S. dollars, and the government will return the U.S. dollars to Acumen.
The government and Acumen are still finalizing the details of the agreement, but the product is expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2023.
Acumen currently has 15,000 users and was authorized as a lender by the Central Bank of El Salvador in November 2021.
