**El Salvador to issue $1 billion Bitcoin bonds to build the world's first 'Bitcoin city'**
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele announced at the Bitcoin 2022 conference that his country would issue $1 billion of Bitcoin-backed bonds to fund the construction of the world's first "Bitcoin city."
The bonds will be issued in two tranches, with $500 million going to purchase Bitcoin directly and $500 million used to fund the construction of the "Bitcoin city" and the development of geothermal Bitcoin mining infrastructure in the country.
The "Bitcoin city" will be located in the eastern region of El Salvador and will be built using Bitcoin as its official currency. The city will be exempt from all taxes, including income tax, capital gains tax, property tax, and sales tax.
Bukele said that the Bitcoin bond issuance plan will be implemented in 2022 and that the country is working with Blockstream and IFinex (the parent company of Tether) to create the bonds.
El Salvador was the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021. Since then, the country has made several progressive moves to promote the use of Bitcoin, including the construction of a Bitcoin mining facility powered by geothermal energy.
