**Cryptocurrency market downturn sees sharp decline in venture capital investment**
The cryptocurrency market downturn has seen a sharp decline in venture capital investment, with monthly funding down to $500 million to $1 billion from $2 billion to $3 billion in the previous quarter, according to JPMorgan analysts.
The current level of investment gives an annual rate of almost $10 billion, which is less than one-third of last year’s pace, they wrote in a note on Monday.
“This is a worrying development as it shows an unwillingness by venture capital funds to deploy capital in the digital assets sector,” wrote Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, global head of JPMorgan’s multi-asset strategy team.
He believes it increases the likelihood that the current weakness in cryptocurrency markets may be here for some time.
Panigirtzoglou also said other metrics such as sluggish bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) exchange-traded-fund flows point to persistent weakness.
