**Japan to Simplify Crypto Token Screening, Lower Fees for Startups**
Japan's financial regulator is planning to delegate the screening of new crypto tokens to the Japan Virtual Currency Exchange Association (JVCEA), according to a report by Nikkei Asia.
The move is expected to reduce the cost and time for startups to launch new tokens in the country. Currently, crypto exchanges must submit applications for new tokens to the Financial Services Agency (FSA), which can take several months to review.
Under the new system, the JVCEA will be responsible for screening new tokens and issuing “seals of approval” to those that meet certain criteria. Tokens that receive the JVCEA seal will be exempt from the FSA's review process.
The FSA said the move would help to “create a more efficient system” for the listing of new tokens. The JVCEA has already alerted its members to the upcoming changes, the report said.
The measure also aligns with Japan's recent efforts to encourage crypto startups to stay in the country after high taxes prompted some startups to exit the market. The Japanese government is currently considering corporate tax breaks to ease the burden on crypto companies operating in the country.
The initiative to simplify token screening has been in the works since at least June, according to a previous report by Bloomberg Japan.
Aside from looking to unburden startups, Japan has also been investing in the metaverse, while on the other hand, the government is planning stronger anti-money laundering controls on the industry.
