Circle, a new bitcoin startup backed by Goldman Sachs, announced today that it will offer free bitcoin banking and storage. However, the company will not be a trading platform and will not offer its own bitcoin exchange.
In a blog post, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said that the company plans to offer a “high-level, revenue-generating service” on top of its free bitcoin banking and storage. Allaire said that Circle is “interested in the long-term value of digital money, not optimizing for minor short-term profit.”
Circle’s fiat-to-bitcoin conversion rate will be “competitive,” Allaire said, but it may be higher or lower than other exchanges. Customers who deposit fiat currency and buy bitcoin through Circle’s service will need to pay the associated interchange fees.
Circle is insuring customer deposits against security threats. The company has secured an initial policy for 100% of assets under management, which includes all customer balances as well as Circle reserves. The policy is through underwriters with excellent S&P ratings.
Circle is still in development and not all intended features are yet complete. The company is considering ways to ensure that Circle customers are not exposed to bitcoin’s price volatility.
Circle is a serious about changing the world, Allaire said. “We are prepared for that to take time.”
