**China’s central bank to crack down on cryptocurrency speculation**
The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) is set to crack down on cryptocurrency speculation, with a focus on ensuring the integrity of the Chinese yuan.
In a speech on Tuesday, PBoC vice governor Fan Yifei said that the central bank will “reinforce regulatory measures both internally and with external parties to rectify different kinds of cryptocurrencies.”
Fan’s comments come as part of a wider effort by the PBoC to scrutinize cryptocurrency projects that may undermine financial health in China.
In March, former PBoC governor Zhou Xiaochuan warned of the risks posed by cryptocurrency speculation, saying that it could “undermine the confidence in the fiat currency.”
Earlier this month, reports suggested that the Public Information Network Security Supervision Agency under the Ministry of Public Security has been expanding the scope of its internet monitoring to overseas cryptocurrency exchanges that are servicing domestic investors.
