A US citizen has pleaded guilty to laundering more than $200 million in cryptocurrency through a Bitcoin mixer service, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) announced on Wednesday.
Larry Harmon, 37, of Akron, Ohio, admitted to operating Helix, a Darknet-based service that laundered Bitcoin for Darknet markets, including AlphaBay, Hansa, and Dream Market.
Harmon admitted to receiving more than 350,000 Bitcoin worth $300 million at the time and $16 billion at the current value. He then laundered the Bitcoin through Helix, obscuring the origin of the funds and making it difficult for law enforcement to track.
Harmon faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. He is scheduled to be sentenced on February 10, 2023.
The DoJ said that Harmon's guilty plea is the first of its kind in the United States. It represents a significant step forward in the fight against cryptocurrency-related money laundering.
