The Department of Justice (DOJ) is looking for a new cryptocurrency expert to join its newly formed Cyber Digital Task Force (DCI).
The new hire will be responsible for “digital currency themes and blockchain technology for the criminal division,” also known as the Digital Currency Initiatives Unit.
The DCI itself was formed in July 2018, when it released a report on its plans for a digital forensics unit.
The new posting comes as recent ransomware attacks have brought increased attention to cryptocurrency. The DOJ is responsible for recovering the millions of dollars in Bitcoin that hackers received when they froze the infrastructure of Colonial Pipeline.
Along with the significant funds that have been poured into blockchain analysis platforms, this new position is further evidence that the recovery of cryptocurrency assets has become a national priority.
The DOJ will pay the new cryptocurrency expert, a GS-15, between $144,128 and $172,500 per year. Applications for the current position will close on July 19.
Last year, the DOJ seized more than $1 billion in Bitcoin that was stolen from the operators of the now-defunct darknet marketplace Silk Road.
