Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has announced plans to launch a U.S.-based exchange. The new exchange will be run by a company called BAM Trading Services, which is a subsidiary of Binance.
The announcement comes after Binance barred U.S. customers from using its global platform in mid-June. The move was made due to uncertainty over the U.S. regulatory environment for cryptocurrency exchanges.
In an interview with Cheddar, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao said that the new U.S. exchange will not be based in New York state. New York has a strict regulatory regime for cryptocurrency businesses, and Binance does not want to have to comply with the state's "BitLicense."
"The U.S. historically has made very clear regulations, so we hope that will clear up," Zhao said. "But despite the regulatory uncertainties currently, we're willing to try."
Zhao added that Binance is still in the early stages of planning the new U.S. exchange, and that it is not yet clear when it will launch.
