This news appears to signal a change in direction for Binance, which has previously avoided the strict compliance measures that other major exchanges have adopted, such as Coinbase.
Binance's KYC (know-your-customer) processes were considered "the least stringent in the industry," Bloomberg reported last year. Users only need an email address to open a trading account with the exchange, and the report suggested that this "anonymity" made it difficult for Binance to track money laundering criminals and market manipulators.
However, Binance has been working to increase its compliance since then. In August of last year, the exchange partnered with Chainalysis, a cryptocurrency compliance and investigation software provider, to monitor cryptocurrency transactions in real time and prevent potential illicit activity.
