**ASX completes blockchain prototype, eyes 2017 decision on production system**
The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) has completed the prototype stage of its blockchain-based settlement system, with a decision on whether to move to production expected in the second half of 2017.
In a statement, ASX CEO Dominic Stevens said the exchange had successfully completed the distributed ledger prototyping stage and had moved on to building an industrial-strength solution that could replace chess – the exchange’s existing cash equities clearing, settlement and sub-registry system.
“We believe that blockchain and distributed ledgers have the potential to significantly improve settlement processes,” Stevens said.
“The completion of the prototype is a significant milestone in our blockchain journey and we are pleased with the progress we have made.
“We will continue to work with our partners to build an industrial-strength solution that will meet the needs of our market participants.”
ASX first announced its intention to explore blockchain technology in early 2016, when it unveiled a partnership with New York-based startup Digital Asset Holdings (DAH).
As previously reported, ASX owns an 8.5% stake in DAH, having invested upwards of $20 million in the project to date.
