A group of major automakers have joined together to create a blockchain-based platform that will allow vehicles to pay tolls and parking fees automatically.
The Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI), which was founded in May 2018, aims to make it easier for vehicles to share data with each other and with infrastructure, such as toll roads and parking meters. This will eventually eliminate the need for drivers to pay tolls or find parking spaces manually.
MOBI is also exploring the use of cryptocurrencies for payments. One proposed use case involves compensating drivers in crypto for providing their vehicles with energy back to the grid during an outage.
Other automakers are also looking at blockchain for facilitating processes and data sharing, particularly for the future of self-driving vehicles.
For example, this summer, Daimler-parent company of Mercedes-Benz-partnered with blockchain firm Riddle & Code to produce a hardware wallet for automobiles. The firms' wallet would also create a cryptographic identity for vehicles.
