**Zcash completes Sapling ceremony, destroys private keys**
The Zcash community has completed the Sapling ceremony, destroying private keys that will be used to secure the network’s upcoming Sapling upgrade.
The ceremony, which took place on February 28, involved nearly 90 individuals or teams using unique methods to generate the cryptography toxic waste. The methods used to create — and later destroy — this data ranged from looking at lava lamps to introduce randomness, to using radioactive waste material to generate code.
The Sapling upgrade, which is scheduled for April 28, will introduce several new features to the Zcash network, including a payment disclosure method, inter-blockchain transactions and the issuance of Zcash tokens.
“All of the participants did a wonderful job, and I’m very happy with the diversity and openness of the ceremony,” said Sean Bowe, a member of the Zcash Foundation.
The Sapling ceremony is the second of two hard forks that will be required to implement the upgrade. The first hard fork, which took place on February 13, activated the Sapling upgrade’s new Sapling shielded addresses.
The Sapling upgrade is designed to improve the privacy and scalability of the Zcash network. It is expected to make Zcash more attractive to users who want to make private transactions and to developers who want to build applications on the Zcash blockchain.
