San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange Kraken received the most law enforcement data requests in 2019, according to a new report from the company.
The report, which was published on Tuesday, found that Kraken received 548 requests for user data from law enforcement agencies in 2019. The requests came from 29 different countries, with the United States issuing the most requests (432).
The FBI was the most active U.S. agency in issuing requests, followed by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Of the 548 requests Kraken received, 62% resulted in data being provided to the requesting agency. The remaining 28% of requests were either denied or deemed "non-valid" by Kraken.
Kraken co-founder and CEO Jesse Powell said in a tweet that the cost of servicing law enforcement requests in a "high-wage market" (the firm is based in California) was more than $1 million in 2019.
"Several things contribute to the cost. Older business with more than eight years of data, millions of accounts, high security around accessibility of personal data, the good stuff is all encrypted and hard/slow/impossible to search/export in bulk (upside being its that way for hackers too)," he said in another post.
