**Tezos launches Wrapped Bitcoin (TZBTC) on its blockchain, bringing the world's most liquid cryptocurrency to the Tezos ecosystem.**
Each TZBTC represents one Bitcoin on the Bitcoin blockchain and is minted under the new FA1.2 Tezos token standard.
“The TZBTC brings the brand and liquidity of Bitcoin to the Tezos blockchain and gains the potential for rich functionality made possible by Tezos smart contracts,” said Bitcoin Association Switzerland President Lucas Betschart.
The addition of TZBTC to Tezos is the first step in bringing Bitcoin DeFi to the Tezos ecosystem. Roman Schnider, CFO and Head of Operations at the Tezos Foundation, said that the next steps will be to build atomic swaps for decentralized exchanges and a wrapped Ether (ETH) token.
“This is kind of the first [wrapped] product that we see and there’s a lot more to come,” said Schnider.
The launch of TZBTC comes at a time when decentralized finance (DeFi) is booming on Ethereum. Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is a key component of DeFi on Ethereum, and TZBTC could play a similar role in DeFi on Tezos.
“We’re seeing a lot of interest from the DeFi community in Tezos,” said Schnider. “We think that TZBTC will be a valuable addition to the Tezos ecosystem.”
TZBTC is overseen by a number of organizations, including Bitcoin Association Switzerland, which regulates the “keyholders” who mint and burn TZBTC. Keyholders include Swiss crypto firms Inacta, Lexr, Swiss Crypto Tokens and Taurus.
“Our interest is to push the adoption of Bitcoin,” said Betschart. “So we’re already involved with some other things … to make Bitcoin even more usable.”
