The Winklevoss Twins Win Another Crypto Patent for an ETF
The Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, have won another patent for a cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund (ETF). The patent, which was awarded on June 19, details a method for providing an exchange-traded product holding digital math-based assets.
An ETF, which is run as an Exchange-Traded Fund (ETFS), is a type of security, the price of which is derived from other investment instruments – in this case, cryptocurrencies.
This is the seventh crypto-related patent that the Winklevoss brothers have been awarded, with the first being awarded in December of last year.
The Winklevoss brothers have been trying to get a Bitcoin-tied ETF approved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for years, but the SEC has so far denied their requests.
In March 2017, the SEC denied the Winklevoss brothers’ bid to list a Bitcoin-tied ETF, citing “the rules of a national securities exchange are designed to prevent fraudulent and manipulative acts and practices and to protect investors and the public interest.”
The Winklevoss brothers have said that they will continue to pursue their efforts to get a Bitcoin-tied ETF approved by the SEC.
In the meantime, they are continuing to develop their cryptocurrency businesses. In addition to their Gemini cryptocurrency exchange, the Winklevoss brothers also have a venture capital firm called Winklevoss Capital.
