The Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, have filed for a trust charter with the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) in order to launch their bitcoin exchange, Gemini.
If approved, the charter would allow Gemini to operate as a trust company, which is a type of financial institution that is regulated by the NYDFS. This would make Gemini the second bitcoin exchange to receive a trust charter from the NYDFS, following itBit.
The Winklevoss twins first announced plans to launch Gemini in January of this year. At the time, they said that they were aiming to create a “safe, regulated, and compliant marketplace” for bitcoin trading.
Gemini is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of this year.
