### SEC's crypto oversight unit to focus on investment suitability, trading practices, fund safety, pricing and compliance programs
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) crypto oversight unit is planning to focus its 2023 examinations on investment suitability, trading practices, fund safety, pricing and the effectiveness of compliance programs, according to a new report.
The Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE) said in its annual priorities plan that it will also examine transfer agents – entities which act as intermediaries in securities transactions – that are “developing blockchain technology” or are providing services to digital asset issuers.
“The digital assets market has grown rapidly and presents various risks, including for retail investors who may not adequately understand the differences between these assets and more traditional products,” OCIE wrote.
The agency said it will focus on ensuring that crypto exchanges and funds are “adequately supervising” their employees and that they have “appropriate policies and procedures” in place to protect investors.
OCIE will also examine whether crypto exchanges are complying with federal securities laws, including the anti-fraud provisions of the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934.
The agency said it will “continue to evaluate” the risks associated with crypto assets and will adjust its examination priorities as needed.
