**Government Accountability Office Releases Report on Blockchain Regulation**
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a report on blockchain regulation, finding that it is not yet clear whether blockchain requires a new kind of regulatory framework.
The report notes that continued development of blockchain is needed to understand how DLT and its components will be regulated by the existing legal and regulatory system. Additionally, it is unclear whether new regulation will need to be created because blockchain can hold new and unique challenges.
In January, for example, the EU's top securities watchdog issued a similar statement, noting that after more than a year of fact-finding and soliciting of public comments, its officials concluded that new regulations would be premature.
The GAO report also found that the IRS's digital currency policies are not fully aligned with its mission to protect the revenue and ensure compliance with the tax laws. The report recommends that the IRS take steps to ensure that its policies are consistent with its mission and that it communicates its policies clearly to taxpayers.
