**U.S. Government Agency Awards $2 Million Grant to Develop Blockchain-Based Cybersecurity Platform**
The National Science Foundation (NSF), a long-standing scientific organization that serves as a key conduit for research initiatives in the U.S. to tap federal resources, has awarded a $2 million grant to develop a blockchain-based cybersecurity platform.
The project, led by researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), will create a web-based platform that uses distributed ledger technology to allow researchers to provide metadata and verification information about their scientific data. This information can then be updated as the data evolves in an auditable manner.
In essence, the platform will create a living — and digital — catalog of researchers' work, growing as more information is developed and added. Researchers will also be able to share the data they are examining, according to the abstract.
The grant will begin on Sept. 1, 2018, and run through Aug. 31, 2021, according to the award letter.
