Two lawmakers are calling for a briefing on the largest-ever seizure of online terrorist financing.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) sent a letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of the Treasury requesting a briefing on the investigation.
"The seizure of 300 terrorist cryptocurrency accounts with funds worth in the millions of dollars is a major victory in the fight against terrorism," the lawmakers wrote. "However, it is vital that members of the subcommittee on national security, international development and monetary policy be briefed on the investigation so that we can continue to address the illicit use of cryptocurrency and disrupt terrorist organizations."
The DOJ announced the seizure on Aug. 13. The agency said it had disrupted money-laundering and fundraising efforts involving al-Qaeda, Hamas and ISIS.
"It is important that we stay one step ahead of foreign terrorist entities that threaten the United States," Gottheimer said in a statement. "This briefing will help us do just that."
