**UK Police Seized Hundreds of Millions of Pounds Worth of Crypto in the Last Year**
The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) has seized hundreds of millions of pounds worth of cryptocurrency in the last year, as part of its efforts to target criminals who use crypto for money laundering or terrorism financing.
The NCA said that it has been able to strengthen its crypto capabilities thanks to an additional £100 million in funding from the government.
“We’re in a position where we’ve actually seized hundreds of millions of pounds worth of cryptocurrency assets within the last year or so,” said NCA deputy director of economic crime, Tom Gould.
He added that the NCA has the investigative tools and the ability to store seized crypto at the national level.
However, Gould said that the NCA still faces challenges in keeping up with the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency market.
“The assets themselves are becoming more diverse, more technical, complex, so our officers are kind of in an arms race trying to keep up,” he said.
Gould also said that it is difficult for the NCA to retain staff when they are competing with the high salaries offered by the private sector.
“One of my sergeants has just been offered £200,000 to go to the private sector. We can’t compete with that. That’s probably the biggest risk we face within this area at the moment,” he said.
The NCA did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
