**UK Police Consider Using Blockchain to Store Body-Cam Footage**
The U.K. Ministry of Justice is exploring the possibility of using blockchain technology to store body-cam footage from police officers, according to a blog post by David Davidson, the ministry’s director of digital transformation.
Davidson said that using blockchain could help to ensure the authenticity of body-cam footage, as it would create a tamper-proof record of the data. This could be particularly useful in court cases, where the prosecution could use the blockchain record to prove the authenticity of the footage, he said.
“This property of distributing trust could be genuinely transformational in situations where public trust of government might not be taken for granted,” Davidson wrote.
The ledger would not actually store the video footage itself, Davidson said. Rather, it would contain a hash of the video data and metadata, as well as a listing of its location within the government’s storage system.
If the videos are uploaded to a publicly available cloud storage system, “the blockchain would be readable by anyone, anywhere – but only writable by the police,” Davidson wrote.
In a technology overview published by the ministry of justice, the government explains that while a blockchain is immutable, it can only verify the assets stored after they are listed. Files can still be modified prior to being listed on the blockchain.
