The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is planning to consult on a ban on the sale of cryptocurrency derivatives to retail investors, the regulator's executive director for markets, Andrew Woolard, said in a speech on Tuesday.
Woolard said that the FCA will also consult on whether to extend its regulatory remit to cover crypto assets that have similar features to specified investments.
The FCA's cryptoassets taskforce believes that cryptocurrencies pose new challenges to traditional financial regulation, Woolard said, adding that the Treasury will consult in early 2019 on whether and how exchange tokens, as well as related actors such as exchanges and wallet providers, could be regulated effectively.
The U.K. Treasury will also make a "comprehensive" response to the use of crypto assets in financial crime by meeting and going beyond the requirements of the fifth EU anti-money laundering directive (5AMLD), Woolard said.
