, Blockchain.info, a popular cryptocurrency wallet service, has announced that it will add support for Ethereum.
With the move, Blockchain.info users will be able to access their Ether tokens. Ether is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization and is used to power smart contracts on the Ethereum platform.
“The reason we decided to add Ethereum was because we felt that Ethereum really became a community, both the ecosystem and technology have really grown,” Blockchain.info CEO Peter Smith told Cointelegraph.
Smith added that the company did not immediately add support for Ethereum due to demographic issues with the cryptocurrency’s user base. While Coinbase’s wallet service has supported Ethereum since early 2016, Smith said that Blockchain.info’s user base is more global, with 80% of its users located in the United States.
In addition to adding support for Ethereum, Blockchain.info has also integrated the Shapeshift cryptocurrency exchange into its platform, allowing users to quickly trade between Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Blockchain.info is currently available in 140 countries worldwide.
“The most basic thing when you mention our products is the slogan, which is ‘Be your own bank.’ Our philosophy is not running a cryptocurrency bank, but providing everyone with the software package so they can be their bank,” Smith said.
