A new report from researchers at Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province’s Taiyuan University of Technology and Netta Lab, which was published by Chinese news agency Securities Daily, has found that at least 80% of altcoins have copied their code from other projects.
The purpose of the report was to analyze 488 cryptocurrencies that use open-source code. After comparing the code of the cryptocurrencies, the researchers found that the base code of 405 cryptocurrencies (83%) is similar by 90% to 100%. Additionally, 324 cryptocurrencies (66.6%) have similarities of 95% to 100%.
Only 38 cryptocurrencies (8%) were found to have similarities below 80%. Another 45 cryptocurrencies (about 9%) are said to have similarities of 80% to 90%.
**Altcoins Value Comes From Marketing, Not Technology Development**
The founder of Netta Lab, Xie Shaoyun, emphasized that the findings of the report show that most altcoins allocate capital for marketing rather than to develop technology. She added:
“Therefore, many blockchain projects shift their focus from technology development to marketing, leading to increasing theft of gray matter and religion in this field.”
Xie Shaoyun also criticized the stereotype in the thoughts of those who worked in the distributed ledger technology, saying:
“Currently, the industry still lacks breakthroughs in innovation, problem solving and promoting application development in the beginning stage. Everyone is still in psychology of testing and luck.”
She concluded:
“We should return to the nature, focus on solving practical problems, develop tools that can help users to use easily and bring convenience, build value and ability to use practices, create out of actual products and promote the development of the industry from actual value.”
