**Japan police report ¥88 million in cryptocurrency thefts**
The National Police Agency (NPA) of Japan has reported that cryptocurrency thefts in the country have reached ¥88 million (US$820,000) since June 2017.
The cases mostly revolve around famous cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ether and Ripple, the police report.
The Mainichi Newspaper also analyzed:
“The most damage in the field of cryptocurrency as of June 2017, Ripple must be mentioned with 29.6 million yen, followed by Bitcoin with 29.3 million yen.
The impact on other currencies like Ethereum and Nem is much less, 200,000 and 100,000 yen respectively. ”
The newspaper further revealed that while many victims did not set up two-factor authentication for their cryptocurrency accounts, at least three accounts were installed but still “visited” by the thieves.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) helps to create an additional security layer for cryptocurrency accounts, besides, it also requires users to produce an electronic token before being able to log in to their accounts.
NPA does not announce exactly how many cases in which criminals have passed the method of authentication two factors to take the act of stealing money.
According to The Mainichi, the police agency said that the amount of stolen property was likely to have been quickly converted into other forms, including cash.
