The Charity Commission of England and Wales has warned that cryptocurrency donations pose a “high risk” to charities and should be avoided.
In a speech on Wednesday, Helen Stephenson, the Commission’s chief executive officer, said that charities should “exercise caution” when considering accepting cryptocurrency donations.
“Our guidance stresses the risks involved in the use of cryptocurrency, and advises trustees to exercise caution,” she said.
The Commission’s warning comes as the use of cryptocurrency donations by charities has increased in recent years. In a July 2022 blog post, Commission Assistant Director of Policy Sam Jackson said that crypto could become a “more mainstream route to investing, trading, and moving assets,” citing fundraising successes using digital assets in Ukraine, and the U.K.’s own goal to become a crypto hub.
However, the Commission warned that there are a number of risks associated with cryptocurrency donations, including volatility, fraud, and theft.
“Charities should be aware that cryptocurrency is a high-risk asset and that they may lose money if they invest in it,” Stephenson said.
