**Meta faces new questions from lawmakers over crypto scams**
A group of Democratic senators has sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, asking the company to provide details about its policies for addressing cryptocurrency scams on its platforms.
The senators noted that according to data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), 49% of all cryptocurrency fraud reports received by the agency from January 2021 to March 2022 involved scams that originated on social media. The scams cost consumers a total of $417 million.
"While crypto scams are prevalent across social media, several of Meta's sites are particularly popular hunting grounds for scammers," the senators wrote.
The group wants Meta to describe its current policies for proactively finding and removing crypto scammers, spell out its procedures for verifying that crypto ads on its platforms aren't scams, and say to what extent it collaborates with law enforcement to track down fraudsters.
The senators also asked Meta to provide data on the number of cryptocurrency scams that have been reported on its platforms, the amount of money that has been lost by consumers as a result of these scams, and the number of accounts that have been banned for promoting cryptocurrency scams.
Meta has not yet responded to the senators' letter.
